For the last week, I’ve been writing about one of the most exciting investment themes I see developing today: the convergence of AI and healthcare.
We’ve looked at AI designing drugs, precision medicine, robotics, diagnostics, and the peptide revolution. Each is a massive trend on its own. But as I’ve said, the really big opportunities can emerge when powerful technologies begin converging.
Today, I want to take that idea to its logical extreme.
What happens when technology connects directly to the human brain?
It sounds like science fiction. But Elon Musk is already putting computer chips into human brains, and people are using them to control computers with their thoughts.
Welcome to the world of the brain-computer interface, or BCI.
Think about this: a human being thinks about moving a computer cursor… and the cursor moves. No mouse. No keyboard. Just thought.
That’s the promise of a BCI. Our brains constantly produce electrical signals, and scientists are learning how to decode those signals and turn them into commands a computer can understand.
The possibilities are incredible. Someone who has lost the ability to move could control a computer with their thoughts. Someone who cannot speak could potentially communicate again. Eventually, BCIs could control robotic limbs, restore lost senses, and completely change how humans interact with machines.
And the science “fiction” is disappearing quickly.
Musk’s BCI company, Neuralink, already has human trials involving thought-controlled computers and robotic arms, along with research aimed at decoding words directly from thought. It’s also preparing to investigate whether the technology could restore visual perception for people with severe vision loss.
We’re watching the earliest stages of a technology that could fundamentally change the relationship between humans and machines.
Neuralink isn’t simply building a chip. Musk and his team had to rethink how that chip gets into the brain.
The company’s system uses extremely thin electrode threads that require an incredible degree of precision to implant. Neuralink therefore built a specialized surgical robot using advanced optical systems, sensors, and computer vision to perform the procedure.
This is where the investment story gets really interesting.
Neuralink requires advanced semiconductors to process neural signals. It needs AI and software to interpret those signals. It needs incredibly precise robotics to implant the device. And it relies on decades of advances in neuroscience to understand what those signals actually mean.
AI + semiconductors + robotics + neuroscience. Four enormous innovation trends converging in one technology.
That’s exactly the type of setup I look for.
Musk gets most of the headlines, but an entire BCI industry is beginning to form around him.
Synchron is developing an interface that can be implanted through blood vessels rather than open-brain surgery, and it has collaborated with tech giants including Apple (AAPL) and Nvidia (NVDA).
Precision Neuroscience is developing a thin electrode array placed on the brain’s surface and recently partnered with Medtronic (MDT) to integrate its technology with Medtronic’s neurosurgical platform.
Paradromics is taking another approach, developing a high-bandwidth interface initially focused on restoring communication.
The market remains tiny compared with AI, pharmaceuticals, or semiconductors. Depending on how the industry is defined, forecasts generally see the BCI market growing into the billions of dollars over the coming decade.
That doesn’t scare me away. It gets my attention.
We’re early.
If you’ve been reading The First Move recently (which you better be!), you know I’ve been talking about a pattern I’ve watched repeat throughout Elon Musk’s career. I call it the Musk Stampede.
Musk helps prove a market is real. Capital begins flowing into it. Competitors arrive. Suppliers emerge. The ecosystem expands. Eventually, Wall Street discovers the opportunity is much larger than one Elon Musk company.
We watched versions of this happen with digital payments, electric vehicles, solar power, and commercial space. I believe we’re watching the early stages of another Musk Stampede right now, and Neuralink could be the catalyst.
There are obviously enormous hurdles ahead.
But remember how I approach innovation investing… I don’t want to wait until every problem has been solved and everyone on Wall Street agrees the technology is going to work. By then, we’re no longer early.
I want to identify transformative trends as the technology begins proving itself, capital starts arriving, and the masses still consider the idea too futuristic.
BCI is moving closer to that point.

Like “The Man Who Broke a World Record With His Mind”, Nolan Arbaugh.
Nolan was paralyzed in a diving accident, but within weeks of receiving a Neuralink implant, he was able to control a cursor with his mind, allowing him to play online chess and video games, browse the internet, and control Bluetooth-enabled devices using only his thoughts.
There are plenty more stories like Nolan’s that I dive into.
If you haven’t watched it yet, do yourself a favor and correct that.
Because the biggest winner from the Neuralink revolution may not ultimately be Neuralink itself.
It could be the companies that grow up around it.
